Moreover, why do I need to emphasize and expound these things? I believe I have answered that question even at the start; these points are what are lacking in the training of Eagle Scouts but as I’ve said, these are not flaws but instead, these are opportunities to the readers to see a different view and aspect to the truer meaning of becoming an Eagle Scout the way I see it. This is my personal manifesto and simple definition of Eagle Scouting and the how and Eagle Scout should live.
To start with, I would like to pose this simple yet meaningful question worth reflecting; have you been an Eagle Scout? If your answer is yes, then stop reading, there’s no point of reading this. But if you’ll answer no, then I am happy that there are still humble Eagle Scout that are willing to learn to swallow their pride and admit that there are still more to learn and will still seek for learning; this the first point I would like to expound. When we become an Eagle Scout we become so overwhelmed with the power and privileges that comes with it, but we never or seldom realize that the more we learn, the more we see that there are still thousands more to learn. The challenge lies then to us, the Eagle Scouts, to continually update, educate and train ourselves, not just because we are adult leaders, but because we are examples of how scouting can make this world a better and safer place to live in. We train and educate ourselves not for fame and glory but for the sake of returning these knowledge and skills to those who are lower than us, and in return helping building a better world. Therefore, when we become an Eagle Scout, we should seek more learning thus making ourselves worth emulating and worthy to train and form other Eagle Scouts.
This leaves me to my second point; the duty that lies in becoming an Eagle Scout. What is this duty? Is this the duty to God, to our Country, to Others and to Ourselves? Is this the duty called by the Scout Oath and Law? Yes! All of these duties turn into one. The duty to form and train Eagle Scout is the primordial purpose of becoming an Eagle Scout; it is simply helping and assisting Scout Units in their journey of producing more Eagle Scouts. But does this end in just mere production of Eagle Scouts? If you’ll answer yes, then you’ve misunderstood your purpose; the goal here is that we produce Eagle Scouts that are more than us, more than how we become as result of our continuous education, we can teach and educate those in the younger generation something more than they deserve. We are called to in the name of our Duty to God and Country, to produce better servants of God and better citizens of the State. This might be confusing, yes I would strongly agree to that, because this second point entails with it the totality of becoming an Eagle Scout. Going back, the act of producing Eagle Scouts that are more than us would directly result in fulfilling our Duties to God, Country, to Other and to Ourselves. First, to God, when we train other Eagle Scouts, we fulfil our duty to God by bringing our brothers in scouting nearer to Him and to serve for His greater glory – that is why, scouting is serving God by serving His people. Secondly, when we develop good citizens in scouting, we are easing the burden our Government and of the State in the increasing number of people who are becoming part of the problem and not of the solution, thus we fulfil our duty our Country. Lastly, when we help develop holistically our brothers and sisters in scouting, we are in one way or the other helping them – by means of helping them gain skills for survival and skills for self-reliance. When we are able to form Eagle Scouts by helping them gain skills to survive, we are teaching them how to live a life with purpose – to serve God and His people, we are helping them seek their selves – to actualize their real worth, and to make them realize that they are great and to let them see that there is still hope, that hope will guide them in combatting real – life struggles and to survive this world of competition. By fulfilling these three duties we also have fulfilled the Scout Oath and Law. Therefore, our duty as an Eagle Scout requires responsible servant leadership and continuous influence towards the younger generation, to form and train them holistically to become more than us, thus passing to them a better Philippines; the point here is that when we help others we are helping them and at the same time serving God and Our country.
The responsibility of continuous education and the duty to form leaders out of Eagle Scouts from the younger generation calls for the third and last point I would like to emphasize; the holistic transformation of the person inside the Eagle Scout. The end point of becoming an Eagle Scout is the skill and character because the truest essence of becoming an eagle scout is not just the skills nor did the activities participated, but the spirit of our founder B.P. be with us always, as we live our day to day life, that we are scouts of peace, love and harmony; that the spirit of the scout oath and law be with us always. He said that “The end is character — character with a purpose. And that purpose, that the next generation be sane in an insane world, and develop the higher realization of Service, the active service of Love and Duty to God and neighbor”. For we do not survive with skills alone; character and attitude speaks more than how scouting taught us. We will never be able to train other Eagle Scouts if we are not even trained; for we cannot give what we don’t have – this calls for the combination of the first and second point. In fulfilling the third point, the holistic transformation of the person inside each Eagle Scout, it requires something more than the first two points, for character is rooted to our personhood – the personhood rooted to how we are brought, the upbringing and even everything that surrounds us. This point is way deeper than the two points, and that first two points are reliant to this point. I will not expound more on what character is and how we gained our unique character but rather I would expound on what character we should be developing or what we should have. That character is the character willing to selflessly offer his life for his people, the character of service towards his people, and that character that sacrifices. These three characters are intertwined to each other. A true Eagle Scout will selflessly offer and sacrifices his life in the name of service – the service of training and producing more Eagle Scouts and to serving his family because Eagle Scouting does not only cover the character of service towards other scouts but it encompasses the services towards our family, friends and to those who are in need – the marginalized and the poor. This character will result to responsible servant leadership that this country needs. This character with a purpose will be our driving force to actualize the first two points. Therefore, the greatest goal of an Eagle Scout is to actualize their selves and to holistically transform their selves that calls for character and skills for survival and this survival calls for harmoniously and peacefully living with others – a better place to live in.
The point of writing this is not to persuade nor change the Eagle Scout in you. This is my view and understanding of the task that comes by being an Eagle Scout. These three points are not just the only points towards becoming an Eagle Scout, but these three are the essential points that will soon help you actualize the rest. This is how I see Eagle Scouting and Scouting in general as the key to nation building. Always remember that, we never fail when we try to do our duty, we always fail when we neglect to do it. The end point here is that, to where be you; to be an Eagle Scout or to become an Eagle Scout?
