My tribute to our Elder Senior Brother Benjamin Cordero, EAGLE SCOUT.
I can still remember quite vividly the time when I first met this senior brother of ours. It was during the Eagle Scouts Association of the Philippines General Assembly in Olongapo City. I, together with Brother Joel Mari Espiritu, ESAP – Angeles City President 2008, participated on the said assembly. As we walked away from our van upon arrival, I saw this senior brother, assisted by his wife, waiting on the right side of the hotel door. With my eagerness and happiness to see so many Eagle Scouts, I went to him and gave him my sincerest, firmest and warmest left handshake and said “Good Morning Sir, AA po of Angeles City Council”. His reply was short but it was something I did not expect, he said “I think I know you, you look familiar”. These simple words from Senior Brother Benjamin Cordero were motivating indeed, especial for a newly Eagle Scout. I felt the warmest welcome from a dear elder, and the happiness he also felt during the handshake. He doesn't know me personally that time but I felt his warm handshake wrapped with trust and loyalty. A feeling of being part of the family and being safe with brothers especially with Brother Cordero around.
So the assembly continued , the second time we were able to talk was before the investiture of being an ESAP member. I remember he said that every time he goes to any jamboree or gathering of scouts, he feels young and alive. He doesn’t care if it would be far from his place or if the travel will really pay toll on his health condition. What was important for him was to be at home with the scouts. The funny part is I think he was really dramatic in expressing those words and he was acting it. I also admired the dedication shared by his wife. His wife is always at his side and she assists Brother Cordero to every scouting event. However, when the assembly was done and all were bidding farewell, I was not able to bid good day to him. But his actions remained in me and in my personality. That is why, until now, after 5 years I can still remember our meeting.
I know, he might be laughing now when he reads my short letter to him. He might say, hindi ko na siya maalala or hopefully he might say sinabi ko yon dahil naramdaman ko na kapatid kitang itinuturing. But what ever he thinks about this tribute to him. I will always say that he is part of the reason why I am motivated to help younger brothers. I want to pass on what he taught me as a young eagle brother. A salute to such leader and motivator.
Again Sir Cordero,
"I am AA Defensor A. Manacmol. Brother from Angeles City Council. Thank you po sa ipinakita ninyo sa akin, at panghabang buhay po naming itutuloy ang adhikang kasama ka. Time will come that We will be one and unified. We will never lose that dream Sir Cordero."
(My dearest, warmest, firmest left handshake you sir.)
UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN.
